In southern WV, southwest of Beckley; organized Jan 26, 1850 from Logan County. Name Origin: For the Wyoming Valley of PA; the name was popularized by the 1809 Thomas Campbell (1777-1844) poem "Gertrude of Wyoming" about the Indian attack on the Wyoming Valley in 1778.

Area (sq mi): 501.82 (land 500.88; water 0.94). Pop per sq mi: 48.90.

Name Origin: From an Indian word maughwauwame 'large meadows,' originally applied to a valley in northeastern PA, but made famous in the popular poem "Gertrude of Wyoming," published in 1809 by British poet Thomas Campbell (1777-1844).
