In southwestern VA, southwest of Roanoke; organized May 1, 1790 from Montgomery County. Name Origin: For George Wythe (1726-1806), VA patriot, first law professor in the U.S., member of the House of Burgesses (1758-68), and signer of the Declaration of Independence
