Wyville Thomson Ridge
an underwater ridge between the Faeroe Islands and the northern coast of Great Britain. The Wyville Thomson Ridge is about 100 km long and is situated at a depth of 500 m. It separates the Faeroe-Shetland Channel of the Norwegian Sea, where depths exceed 1,000 m, from the Atlantic Ocean. Warm North Atlantic waters flow over the ridge, except for a thin bottom layer consisting of cold waters of the Arctic Ocean, which flow into the North Atlantic basin. The ridge was named in honor of the naturalist C. W. Thomson. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
