Xbase
Refers to dBASE-like languages such as Clipper and FoxPro. Originally almost identical to dBASE, new commands and features over the years made Xbase languages only partially dBASE compatible. See CA-Clipper and Visual FoxPro.
Xbase - Generic term for the dBASE family of database languages. Coined in response to threatened litigation over use of the copyrighted trademark "dBASE."

Borland acquired the dBASE product line from Ashton Tate back in 1991, but by the mid-1990s the popularity of xBase product lines began to rapidly wane.
The database translation utility enables engineers to translate Algor model files between the native Xbase format and Microsoft Access databases or a comma-separated value format, which is compatible with Microsoft Excel and many third-party applications.
