In north-central NC, west of Winston-Salem; organized Dec 28, 1850 from Surry County. Name Origin: For the Yadkin River, which runs through it; meaning of the name is unknown.

Area (sq mi): 337.49 (land 335.55; water 1.94). Pop per sq mi: 112.30.
Pop 2005: 37,668. State rank: 62. Pop change: 2000-20005 3.60%; 1990-2000 19.20%. Pop 2000: 36,348 (White 89.30%; Black or African American 3.40%; Hispanic or Latino 6.50%; Asian 0.20%; Other 3.90%). Foreign born: 4.40%. Median age: 37.60.
Income 2000: per capita $18,576; median household $36,660; Pop below poverty level: 10.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,110-$23,863.
