Yotvingians

(also Jatwings, Sudovians), a Prussian tribe, ethnically close to the Lithuanians. The Yotvingians lived in a region known as Sudovia, located between the middle course of the Neman River and the upper course of the Narew River. Their main occupations were land cultivation, hunting, and fishing; they also produced handicrafts.

The princes of Rus’ made several incursions into the territory of the Yotvingians. In the 1140’s and 1150’s, the Yotvingians became subject to the Galician-Volynian Principality and Mazovia. In 1283 their lands were seized by the Teutonic Order. Some of the Yotvingians’ lands were incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
