Yichang

Also found in: Wikipedia, Hutchinson 0.03 sec.
Yichang or Ichang (both: ē-chäng), city (1994 est. pop. 428,400), SW Hubei prov., China, a river port on the Chang. It is the western terminus for large oceangoing vessels traveling up the Chang from Shanghai; there goods are transshipped to smaller boats that can negotiate the gorges and rapids of the Chang. The gorges above the city are noted for their scenic beauty. Yichang has industries that produce food, cement, chemicals, paper, and textiles.

Yichang

 or I-ch'ang

City (pop., 2003 est.: 653,040), western Hubei province, east-central China. An ancient city, it is located at the head of navigation on the Yangtze River (Chang Jiang), below the entrance to the gorges of the Daba Mountains. As the gateway to the rich province of Sichuan, it was often disputed during times of Chinese political turmoil. It was made a treaty port for foreign trade in 1877; a Western quarter grew beside it, and many Western commercial firms established branches there. It was occupied by the Japanese and badly damaged during World War II, but the city and its shipyards have been rebuilt. It is now an industrial centre and a distribution point for the region's manufactured goods.

A four-day/three-night cruise between Chongqing and Yichang (either downstream or upstream) that includes the Three Gorges Dam starts at $450 pp/dbl.
Medium-haul destinations include Changzhi, Lianyungang, Luoyang, Nantong, Nanyang, Xiangfan, Xuzhou, Yichang and Zhoushan.
The three gorges of the Yangtze, although beautiful and still worth seeing, are now largely obliterated by the rising water behind the dam near Yichang.
