On southwestern border of TX panhandle, southwest of Lubbock; created Aug 21, 1876 from Bexar County; organized 1907. Name Origin: For Col. Henderson King Yoakum (1810-56), army officer in Indian and Mexican wars, and trustee of Austin College (1849-56)
