Carmarthenshire, Welsh Sir Gaerfyrddin, county, 926 sq mi (2,398 sq km), S Wales. In 1974, Carmarthenshire became part of the nonmetropolitan county of Dyfed Dyfed (dŭv`ĕd), former county, W Wales.

, but in 1996 Dyfed was dissolved and Carmarthenshire was restored as a unitary authority. The National Botanical Garden of Wales is located in Llanarthne.
Carmarthenshire
a county of S Wales, formerly part of Dyfed (1974--96): on Carmarthen Bay, with the Cambrian Mountains in the N: generally agricultural (esp dairying). Administrative centre: Carmarthen. Pop.: 176 000 (2003 est.). Area: 2398 sq. km (926 sq. miles)
