Zaandam (zändäm`), municipality (1991 est. pop. 130,000), North Holland prov., W Netherlands, near Amsterdam. Manufactures include food products, chemicals, lumber, and machinery. Peter I Peter I or Peter the Great, 1672–1725, czar of Russia (1682–1725), major figure in the development of imperial Russia.
