Zaionchkovskii, Andrei Medardovich 

Born Dec. 8 (20), 1862; died Mar. 22, 1926, in Moscow. A Russian and Soviet military historian, promoted to general of the infantry in 1917.

Zaionchkovskii graduated from the Nikolai Engineering College and also from the Academy of the General Staff (1888). He commanded an infantry regiment and brigade in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–05. In World War I, Zaionchkovskii commanded an infantry division (from 1912), a corps, and then the Dobruja Army. He retired in May 1917. Joining the Red Army in January 1919, Zaionchkovskii served in the All-Russian Main Staff, was chief of staff of the Thirteenth Army from August 1919 to March 1920, and then was assigned to work under the chief of the Field Staff of the Revolutionary Military Council of the Republic. He was a professor at the M. V. Frunze Military Academy from 1922. He wrote works on the history of the Crimean War and on World War I. His works, based on a wide range of sources and containing a wealth of factual material, are still valuable today.
