Zaionchkovskii, Petr Andreevich 

Born Sept. 5 (18), 1904, in Ural’sk. Soviet historian, doctor of historical sciences (1950). Became a member of the CPSU in 1931. Son of an army physician.

Zaionchkovskii graduated from the Moscow Institute of History, Philosophy, and Literature in 1937. He took part in the Great Patriotic War. From 1944 to 1952 he was in charge of the manuscript department of the V. I. Lenin Library. He has been a professor at Moscow State University since 1951. His most important works deal with the history of the Russian peasantry and with 19th-century Russian domestic politics and military affairs. He is the editor of the scholarly editions of the diaries of D. A. Miliutin (vols. 1–4, 1947–50), P. A. Valuev (vols. 1–2, 1961), and A. A. Polovtsov (vols. 1–2, 1966) and of the bibliographical guide Reference Works on the History of Prer-evolutionary Russia (1971). Zaionchkovskii is an honorary member of the American Historical Association (1967). He has been awarded two orders, as well as medals.
