Zalezhskii, Vladimir Nikolaevich 

(party pseudonyms lurii and Vladimir). Born Sept. 7 (19), 1880, in the village of Achi, Laishevo District, now Tatar ASSR; died Feb. 2, 1957, in Moscow. A member of the Russian revolutionary movement. Member of the Communist Party from 1902. Descendant of a noble family.

In 1900, Zalezhskii was one of the organizers of the Revolutionary Workers’ Group in Kazan. He did party work in Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Astrakhan, Tsaritsyn, Kiev, Ekaterinoslav, and St. Petersburg, and he was repeatedly subjected to repressions. Managing organizer of the Vyborg Raion Committee and member of the St. Petersburg Party Committee in 1916, Zalezhskii became after the February Revolution of 1917 a member of the Russian Bureau of the Central Committee and member of the Executive Commission of the St. Petersburg Committee of the RSDLP (Bolshevik) and a delegate to the Seventh (April) Party Conference. He worked in the Helsingfors organization of the Bolsheviks and was a delegate to the Sixth Congress of the RSDLP(B).

In late October 1917, Zalezhskii was appointed commissar of the Military Revolutionary Committee of the Ministry of Post and Telegraph and member of the collegium and deputy people’s commissar of post and telegraph. Commissar of the Academy of the General Staff of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army in December 1918, Zalezhskii was appointed chief of the political department of the First Cavalry Army in 1920. From 1923 he engaged in scholarly and pedagogical work. He was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
