Zane, (Elizabeth) Betty (?1766–?1831) heroine; probably born in present-day West Virginia. Her brother, Col. Ebenezer Zane, built Fort Henry in present-day Wheeling, W.Va. During a fierce Indian attack (1782) she is reputed to have run from the fort to a nearby powder magazine, under Indian fire, to replenish the supply of the defenders. She married two times and had seven children.
