Zanjan (zänjän`), city (1991 pop. 254,100), capital of Zanjan prov., NW Iran, on the Zanjan River. It is the trade center for an agricultural region where grain is produced. Manufactures include rugs, metalwork, and milled grain. Zanjan was an area where fighting erupted between local residents and Iranian troops in 1978, just before the Iranian revolution. It was the strongest earthquake to strike Iran since two powerful temblors hit northwestern Gilan and Zanjan provinces on June 21, 1990. In Zanjan, people attacked prisons, attempting to free those imprisoned for failing to pay their taxes. |
