Zariski, Oscar (1899– ) mathematician; born in Kobrin, U.S.S.R. Emigrating to America to teach at Johns Hopkins (1927), he later joined the Harvard faculty (1969) and specialized in algebraic geometry, modern algebra, and topology. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, he received the National Medal of Science (1965) and the Cole Prize. How to thank TFD for its existence?
