Zaunguz Plateau

Zaunguz Plateau

a plateau in the northern part of the Kara Kum Desert (Transunguz Kara Kum). In the east the maximum altitude is 203 m; in the south, the plateau ends with a broken bank 60-80 m in height, at the base of which extend the solonchak Unguz hollows. The surface of the plateau is a sand and rocky sand desert. The sand was formed by the wind erosion of Neocene-period unconsolidated sandstones and the sands of the Transunguz (Zaunguz) suite. Submeridianal layers of sand predominate. In the south and southwest are narrow ridges, called kyry, of indigenous rock.
