Marx Karl . 1818--83, German founder of modern communism, in England from 1849. With Engels, he wrote The Communist Manifesto (1848). He developed his theories of the class struggle and the economics of capitalism in Das Kapital (1867; 1885; 1895). England said in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, celebrities such as Barbara Stanwyck and Zeppo Marx owned ranches nearby during the heyday of horse culture in the Valley. Though Kanfer and Louvish are hardly the first to tell it-there are scores of books on the Marx Brothers, and Joe Adamson's out-of-print 1973 study Groucho, Harpo, Chico, and Sometimes Zeppo is still probably the best of the bunch--both authors have produced worthwhile accounts. Chico, Minnie's favorite son, got his name from chasing ``chicks,'' and Zeppo was placed in the act to keep him from getting into fights. |
