zinc acetate [′ziŋk ′as·ə‚tāt]
(organic chemistry)
Zn(C2H3O2)2·2H2O Pearly-white crystals with an astringent taste; soluble in water and alcohol; decomposes at 200°C; used to preserve wood in textile dyeing, and as an analytical reagent, a feed additive, and a polymer cross-linking agent.

Researchers gave 25 people zinc acetate dihydrate lozenges within 24 hours of the onset of a cold; 23 others received an inert substitute.
