Zoubek, Vladimír 

Born Sept. 21, 1903, in Heřmanův Mĕstec, in what is now East Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. Czechoslovak geologist. Academician of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (1962; corresponding member, 1952). Member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia since 1948.

After graduating from Charles University in Prague in 1928, Zoubek served as an assistant lecturer at the university’s geological institute. In 1931 he became a research worker at the State Geological Institute in Prague. From 1954 to 1956, Zoubek was the director of the Central Geological Institute in Prague. From 1956 to 1962, he was the head of the editorial board of geological maps at the Institute of Geology of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. He became a research associate at the institute in 1962 and served as the institute’s director from 1969 to 1974.

Zoubek’s main works deal with the geology and geochronology of the Precambrian in Czechoslovakia and adjacent territories, with petrology, and with tectonics, in particular, mobile belts, the classification of faults, and the relationship between the formation of ore deposits and magmatism and tectonics.

Zoubek received the State Prize of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic in 1953 and was awarded the M. V. Lomonosov Gold Medal of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1973. In 1976 he was elected a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.
