Zerubbabel (zērŭb`əbəl) [Heb.,=seed of Babylon], in the Bible, a grandson of King Jehoiachin (exiled in 597 B.C.) and governor of Jerusalem. He led a company returning from exile in c.520 B.C. under patronage of the Persian King Darius. Zerubbabel was a contemporary of Haggai and Zechariah, under whose stimulating encouragement he finished the rebuilding of the Temple. He is also known as Zorobabel.
