Zürich, Lake of 

(also Lake Zürich), a lake in Switzerland, north of the Glarus Alps. Lying in an ancient glacial depression at an altitude of 406 m, the lake is 40 km long, ranges in width from 1 to 4 km, covers an area of 88.5 sq km, and has a maximum depth of 143 m. The lake, divided into two sections by the sandbar Hurden and a railroad causeway, drains through the Limmat River into the Aare River, a tributary of the Rhine. It is used for navigation and fishing and is surrounded by health resorts. On its northwestern shore lies the city of Zürich.
