Zürich, Lake of
(also Lake Zürich), a lake in Switzerland, north of the Glarus Alps. Lying in an ancient glacial depression at an altitude of 406 m, the lake is 40 km long, ranges in width from 1 to 4 km, covers an area of 88.5 sq km, and has a maximum depth of 143 m. The lake, divided into two sections by the sandbar Hurden and a railroad causeway, drains through the Limmat River into the Aare River, a tributary of the Rhine. It is used for navigation and fishing and is surrounded by health resorts. On its northwestern shore lies the city of Zürich. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
