Zvonkov, Vasilii Vasil’evich 

Born Dec. 25, 1890 (Jan. 6, 1891), in Borovichi, in what is now Novgorod Oblast; died Nov. 13, 1965, in Moscow. Soviet scientist in the field of transportation. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939). Member of the CPSU from 1951.

In 1917, Zvonkov graduated from the Moscow Institute of Railroad Communication Engineers. From 1923 through 1932 he taught at this institute and at the Leningrad Institute of Waterway Transportation. From 1932 to 1950 he was a professor at the Military Transport Academy and from 1950 to 1955 chairman of the section on the scientific solution of transport problems of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. From 1955 through 1965 he was deputy director of the Institute for Problems of Integrated Transport Systems of the Academy of Sciences. Zvonkov’s works on the design and efficient utilization of traction methods for waterway transportation served as the basis for introducing a new system of ship registration and new methods for testing ships. Of great importance are his studies on integrated transportation. Zvonkov was awarded the Order of Lenin, four other orders, and medals.
