Zwilich, Ellen Taafe (1939–  ) composer; born in Miami, Fla. After studies in violin and composition, she received the first Juilliard doctorate awarded to a woman (1975). She went on to an active career of composing modernistic but communicative music and in 1982 became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in music.
