Tetrahydrofuran (THF), methanol, ethanol, n-hexane, 1,4-dibromobutane,
2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), N,N-tetraethylthiuram disulfide (TD; Tokyo Kasei Organic Chemicals, Tokyo, Japan), silver nitrate (AgN[O.sub.3]), potassium thiocyanate (KCNS), hydrochloric acid (HCl) and copper(I) bromide (CuBr; Kanto Chemicals, Tokyo, Japan) were used as received.

This work details the synthesis of a series of isostructural lanthanide dicyanoaurates complexes containing the ancillary ligand
2,2'-bipyridine. Syntheses were carried out by reaction of Ln3+ triflate salts and potassium dicyanoaurate with
2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) resulting in the compound, [Ln(C10H8N2)(H2O)4(Au(CN)2)], (Ln=Tb and Gd).
The present investigation has been undertaken to fix the role of substrate [[Fe[(
2,2'-bipyridine).sub.3]].sup.2+] in the [Ag.sup.+] catalysed oxidation by peroxodisulphate ([S.sub.2][O.sup.2-.sub.8]).
The addition complexes also exhibited additional peaks for the aromatic protons of the donorligands in the regions 7.24-7.64 (triphenylphosphine), 7.25-8.99 (1,10-phenanthroline), 7.29- 8.51 (pyridine), and 7.09-8.59 (
2,2'-bipyridine).
The most common sensitizers are Ru(II) complexes based on
2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) ligands, such as cis-di(thiocyanato) bis(bpy4,4'-dicarboxylate)ruthenium(II) (N3 [9] and N719 [10]).
