HARDWARE & SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS: PC with
486SX processor, 8MB RAM, 2X CD-ROM drive, 256-color SVGA monitor at 640 x 480 pixels, Windows 3.1 or later, Windows-compatible sound card (16-bit recommended), mouse, keyboard, and external speakers, headphones, or stethoscope.
System requirements:
486SX (33 MHz) or higher microprocessor, Memory 8MB of RAM, hard disk space 6 MB, CD-ROM drive double speed or faster, SVGA 256 color monitor, Windows 95 operating system and Windows NT Workstation 3.5 or later, sound board and headphones or speakers 8 bit required; 16 bit recommended, mouse.
With a multimedia PC level [2.sup.2] (MPC-2) compliant PC (i.e., a
486SX), this drive meets the MPC-2 standard of a 300 kilobyte (K)/sec.
Our electronic classroom houses 54
486SX 25MHz microcomputers for students (each configured with 4MB of RAM, 40MB hard disk and 1028x768 color monitor) plus one 486DX2 66MHz computer for the instructor (with 8MB of RAM, 420MB hard disk, color monitor, SoundBlaster card, CD-ROM drive, stereo amplifier and external speakers).
Purchase no less than a
486SX computer running at 33 MHz.
IBM also plans to phase out all
486SX chips, offering 486DX2/66MHz processors as the entry-level retail product.
* The
486SX and several hybrid 486/386 systems made by companies other than Intel (Intel Corp., Portland, Ore.) do not include a math coprocessor.
For example, a
486SX with 4MB RAM, 40MB HD computer was sufficient for DOS Lotus but not for the newer Windows and spreadsheet software, which are disc- and memory-space eating software.
Minimum processor requirements would be a
486SX, but expect to use a 486DX to achieve good work station performance.
To take full advantage of this capability, however, you need a fast processor (
486SX or above) and at least 6 MB of RAM.
