ABO blood group system

(immunology)
A set of multiple alleles found on a single locus on human chromosome 9 that specifies the presence or absence of certain red cell antigens, which determines the ABO blood group.

The ABO system was first described by Landsteiner in 1900, and remains the most important in the management of tissue and blood transfusion.
