2016, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Benin had requested the restitution of anthropomorphic statues bearing royal emblems taken by the French colonel, Alfred Dodds, during the sacking of the
Abomey Palace in 1892.
In fact, the Zinsou museum's policy towards photography mirrors the attitude of the custodians of the Royal Palaces in
Abomey, a World Heritage site some 100km north of Cotonou and the epicentre of one of Africa's great empires.

The experiments were carried out from March to June 2003 at the Laboratory of Applied Ecology and from May to October 2004 at the experimental station of the Faculty of Agronomic Sciences of
Abomey Calavi University (Benin Republic).

In the mid-1980s when I first began studying these arts in the
Abomey area of Benin, the ancient capital of the Dahomey kingdom, bocio figural arts still held remarkable primacy, and were identified with altering the course of life for both positive and negative ends.
Ethnic groups include the Yoruba in the southeast (migrated from Nigeria in the 12th century); the Dendi in the north-central area (they came from Mali in the 16th century); the Bariba and the Fulbe (Peul) in the northeast; the Betammaribe and the Somba in the Atacora Range; the Fon in the area around
Abomey in the South Central and the Mina, Xueda, and Aja (who came from Togo) on the coast.
In 1943, the French administration created the
Abomey Historical Museum on the site of the old royal palaces of
Abomey that survived the fires of the period of the French conquest.
