Abu Dhabi

a sheikhdom (emirate) of SE Arabia, on the S coast of the Persian Gulf: the chief sheikhdom and capital of the United Arab Emirates, consisting principally of the port of Abu Dhabi and a desert hinterland; contains major oilfields. Pop.: 476 000 (2005 est.). Area: 67 350 sq. km (25 998 sq. miles)

Abu Dhabi

 

Abu-Zabi, town in Trucial Oman, administrative center of the sheikhdom of Abu Dhabi and now the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Situated on a coastal island in a bay on the Persian Gulf. Population, 6,000 to 7,000 (1961). Abu Dhabi is a commercial and transportation post and a center for oil extraction, pearl fishing, and commercial fishing.
