Aerological Station

a weather service establishment that makes regular atmospheric soundings the object of its mission. Aerological stations are equipped with radar or a radio telescope for making observations on the flight of a radiosonde. The aerological radar picks up signals from the radiosonde, thus making it possible to measure the wind velocity, temperature, pressure, and humidity of the atmosphere as high as 30 to 40 km. These data are used for weather forecasting and atmospheric studies. The stations are usually located at distances of 200 to 300 km from one another. In the territory of the USSR there are over 200, and in the whole world, over 1,000 stations.
