Samawah, Al-

 

a city in southern Iraq, on the right bank of the Euphrates, in the muhafaza (province) of Muthanna. Population, 33,500 (1965). Al-Samawah has a railroad station. The city is a trade center for the surrounding agricultural region, where wheat, barley, and, on the irrigated lands, rice and cotton are grown and animals are raised. Al-Samawah also has a cement plant.

Ali Ibrahim Dabon told the National Iraqi News Agency / NINA / that "the Command of Operations began today digging a security trench around the desert of Al- Samawah to prevent terrorists from bringing car bombs to the province of Al-Muthanna," noting that the length of the trench will be 90 km and the duration of time estimated at 45 days.
