Sulaymaniyah, Al-

 

a city in northeastern Iraq; capital of the muhafaza (province) of al-Sulaymaniyah. Population, 86,900 (1965). Al-Sulaymaniyah is situated in the mountains, on the highway from Kirkuk to Kermanshah in Iran. It is the commercial center of an agricultural region specializing in livestock raising and the cultivation of grains, cotton, and tobacco. Industrial enterprises produce foodstuffs, tobacco products, and cement.
