Albert, Abraham Adrian

(1905–72) mathematician; born in Chicago. Known primarily for his work with associative and nonassociative algebras and Riemann matrices, this National Academy of Science member chaired the University of Chicago Mathematics Department (1958–62), fought for government funding of math (1950s–60s), and was vice- president of the International Mathematical Union (1971).
