Born July 4, 1877, in Guéret; died Nov. 1, 1955, in Paris. French linguist.
Dauzat graduated from the University of Paris in 1896, and from the Practical School of Higher Studies in 1899. He became a professor and director of the latter in 1921. He taught at the University of Algiers (1947-48). His main works are on linguistic geography, dialectology, the history of French, and onomastics. Dauzat founded the journals Le Franç, ais moderne (1933) and Onomastica (1947; since 1949, Revue Internationale d’onomastique).
