Ladenburg, Albert

 

Born July 2,1842, in Manheim; died Aug. 15,1911, in Breslau, now Wroclaw (Polish People’s Republic). German organic chemist and chemistry historian.

Ladenburg was a professor at the universities of Heidelberg (from 1872), Kiel (from 1874), and Breslau (1889–1909). He investigated heterocyclic nitrogen compounds, including alkaloids. In 1886 he obtained coniine following the method proposed by A. N. Vyshnegradskii and thus effected the first complete synthesis of an alkaloid.
