Born May 30, 1836, in Ludwinöw, near Krakow; died Aug. 7, 1877, in Podgörze, now part of Kraków. Polish painter. Representative of democratic realism.
Kotsis studied at the School of Fine Arts in Kraków (1850–60) and at the Academy of Arts in Vienna (1860–62). His dramatic scenes of peasant life, revealing his compassion for the hardships of the people, are executed in soft brownish hues. Among his best paintings are Mother Died (c. 1868, L’vov Picture Gallery) and Last Belongings (1870, National Museum, Warsaw).
