Born May 4, 1810, in Walewitz, Poland; died Sept. 27, 1868, in Strasbourg. Count and French statesman. Son of Napoleon I and the Polish countess M. Walewska.
Walewski participated in the Polish Revolution of 1830-31, and after its defeat he settled in Paris. During the reign of Louis Napoleon Bonaparte he was ambassador to Florence, Naples, Madrid, and London. He actively promoted an Anglo-French rapprochement directed against Russia. From 1855 to 1860 he was minister of foreign affairs, and from 1860 to 1863 secretary of state. From 1865 to 1867, Walewski was president of the legislature.
