city and administrative center of Aleksin Raion, Tula Oblast, RSFSR. Situated on the banks of the river Oka, 65 km northwest of Tula, Aleksin has a harbor, as well as a railroad station on the Kaluga-Tula line. Population is 54,000 (1969). Industry includes a fittings and armature plant, a chemical combine, and a cardboard factory; building materials are also produced here. There are technical schools of chemical technology and hydrometeorology. Rest homes and a sanitorium are located in the vicinity of Aleksin. The town is first mentioned in the beginning of the 13th century.
