Main cities in the Aleutians East Borough are Sand Point, Akutan, King Cove, Cold Bay and False Pass.
In Aleutians West, 500 jobs come from local government, while there are 250 local government jobs in the smaller Aleutians East Borough, according to Shanks.
The industry harvests and processes hundreds of millions of dollars worth of seafood each year -- 510 million pounds in 1990 with an ex-vessel (wholesale) value of $126 million at the Port of Dutch Harbor alone; in the Aleutians East Borough, the ex-vessel value of fish landed in 1990 was just under $125 million.
According to Alaska Department of Labor statistics for 1990, manufacturing -- translated, fish processing -- accounted for 73 percent of the estimated 1,400 jobs in the Aleutians East Borough and 37 percent of the roughly 3,900 jobs in the Aleutians West Census Area.
"If you want to have a job you can probably find one," says an official of the Aleutians East Borough. However, the severe lack of available housing is a constant barrier to economic development.
Labor department figures for 1991 reveal an unemployment rate of 2.1 percent for the Aleutians East Borough and 1.8 percent for the Aleutians West Census Area.
Farther up the chain on the Alaska Peninsula, Sand Point and King Cove serve as commercial centers for the Aleutians East Borough. Each offers a fair array of goods and services, including groceries, housewares, mechanical supplies and repair, welding services, marine supplies, restaurants and lodging.
There are very few African-Americans in the region -- .6 percent in the Aleutians East Borough and 7 percent in the Aleutians West Census Area -- more than 75 percent of them on the military island of Adak.
In addition to newspapers from around the state, residents of the Aleutians may receive the Unalaska/Dutch Harbor Aleutian Eagle and the Aleutians East Borough Advocate published in Anchorage.
