Alfur

The following article is from The Great Soviet Encyclopedia (1979). It might be outdated or ideologically biased.

Alfur

a name long used to denote the aboriginal population of the Molucca Islands. The coastal inhabitants of various islands, mainly Seram, Bum, and Halmahera, used this name for the different tribal populations of the remote regions of these islands who did not accept Islam. The term “Alfur” (Arabic-Spanish “savage”) is not used by Soviet ethnographers, as it has no precise ethnological content.
