Established: Authorized on August 31, 1964.
Location:On US 22, Gallitzin Exit, 12 miles west of Altoona in southwestern Pennsylvania.
Facilities:Picnic area, rest rooms, visitor center, museum/exhibit, self- guided tour/trail (@di @di). Entrance fee required.
Activities:Guided tour, hiking.
Special Features:Site preserves traces of the first railroad crossing of the Allegheny Mountains. Built between 1831-1834, the inclined plane railroad permitted transportation of passengers and freight over the mountains from 1834-1854, providing a critical link in the Pennsylvania Mainline Canal system and an important role in opening the interior of the United States to trade and settlement.
