aromatic wood from some species of Aquilaria (Aloexylum) of the family Thymelaeaceae, chiefly A. agallocha, which grows in India and Burma. It is used in the Near East, India, and China as material for fragrant smoking during religious rituals. Portions of the trunk heavily saturated with resinous substances where the wood has been attacked by fungi are particularly valuable. The wood is also used in perfume and the manufacture of necklaces, ornaments, inlays, and costly furniture.
