Alternaria Plant Diseases

diseases caused by fungi of the genus Alternaria. Alternaria blights are known to attack the shoots of many plants: potato, tobacco, apple, pear, gooseberry, and others. In the USSR the most injurious is alternaria blight of cabbage (Alternaria brassicae). The disease affects the entire aerial part of the plant, quite often the seed pods, and other cruciferae. It is manifested by dark spots within which the tissue gradually dies. Control measures include proper crop rotation, treatment of seeds, and destruction of plant residue.
