Study species and potential geographical distribution maps: The eight species of psittacids that inhabit the Yucatan Peninsula were studied: Olive-throated Parakeet (Eupsittula nana), White-fronted Amazon (
Amazona albifrons), Yellow-lored Amazon (
Amazona xantholora), Red-lored Amazon (
Amazona autumnalis), White-crowned Parrot (Pionus senilis), Brown-hooded Parrot (Pyrilia haematotis), Yellow-headed Amazon (
Amazona oratrix), and Southern Mealy Amazon (
Amazona farinosa) (MacKinnon, 2005).
No blue-fronted parrots (
Amazona aestiva) showed lesions, but all were PCR positive (4/94 [4.2%]), suggesting that they were immune, although they were not tested for an immune response.
For instance, there are only 200 Puerto Rican parrots (
Amazona vittata) remaining, with less than 50 left in the wild, making it one of the ten rarest birds on Earth.
