Born Aug. 7 (20), 1908, in Balashov, now in Saratov Oblast. Soviet theoretical physicist. Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (1942).
Upon graduating from Moscow University in 1931, Vlasov began teaching there, becoming a professor in 1944. His major works are in optics, plasma physics, the theory of crystals, the theory of gravitation, and statistical physics. He proposed a method for taking account of the collective interactions between particles and describing their motion, which formed the basis of modern plasma theory (the so-called Vlasov equation). Vlasov received the Lenin Prize in 1970 and has been awarded two orders.
