anchor windlass
[′aŋ·kər ‚wind·ləs] (naval architecture)
A machine, generally located on the forecastle head of a ship, designed to raise or lower an anchor; it consists of a horizontal barrel that is fitted with gearlike projections that engage the links of the anchor chain, and is turned by steam or electrical power. Also known as windlass.
