Born Nov. 21, 1931, in Leningrad. Soviet mathematician. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1974).
Gonchar graduated from Moscow State University in 1954 and became a professor there in 1967. Since 1965 he has been associated with the V. A. Steklov Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Gonchar’s principal works deal with the theory of analytic functions and the theory of approximations.
