Aragats

(Armenian; in Turkish, Alagöz), a mountain massif in the Armenian SSR; located northwest of Yerevan and north of the Ararat plain. It is the highest point in Soviet Armenia and the entire Transcaucasian Highland (4,090 m).

The Aragats massif is a circular, shieldlike elevation crowned by a jagged summit. It is composed of lavas and tufas. The volcanic crater in the summit has been transformed into a glacial cirque. There is glaciation. Steppe vegetation and mountain xerophytes predominate on the slopes (there is sparse oak forest on the southeast section). Near the summit are high-mountain meadows and rockfalls. The ruins of the medieval fort of Anberd are on the southern slope.
