Arbez, Edward (Philip), S. S.
(1881–1967) Catholic theologian; born in Paris, France. Emigrating to the U.S.A. as a seminarian, he studied Near Eastern languages before being ordained a Sulpician priest. While teaching at Catholic University (1928–43) and elsewhere, Arbez earned renown as a biblical scholar; he cofounded the Catholic Biblical Society of America (1936) and chaired the editorial board of the New American Bible.
