To determine the incidence of
atopy in India, 1000 random volunteers underwent SPT with 6 common allergens in India, viz.
Limitations of the study included that parental
atopy status was self-reported and that the researchers noted they did not examine genetic variants of immunoglobulin E synthesis or vitamin D receptor polymorphisms.
Thirty-eight (27.1%) patients had a history of
atopy. The duration of cosmetic usage varied from less than one year in 57 (40.7%) patients to more than five years in 29 (20.7%) patients (Table 3).
Although antibiotics used for the treatment of lung infections in cystic fibrosis are thought to have an increased incidence of
atopy as a secondary, in a study of 100 patients with cystic fibrosis, 16% (12) were found with urticaria, which is not different from the incidence of urticaria in the normal population (15%-25%) (12-13).
This questionnaire included information regarding age, occupation (officer housewife, student, or other); existence of allergic diseases (asthma, allergic rhinitis, drug hypersensitivity food allergy urticaria-angioedema, or venom allergy); and the age at diagnosis; if tonsillectomy was performed, at what age and the reason of removal; if adenoidectomywas performed, at what age and the reason of removal; presence of other diseases (nasal polyp, sinusitis, or upper respiratory tract infection); history of
atopy; and any relative suffering any allergic diseases.
The strongest risk factor for asthma is
atopy which is the genetic propensity to develop IgE antibodies in response to exposure to allergen.
We present a case of Netherton syndrome with congenital ichthyosis with
atopy presenting later.
Although researchers in Croatia (a country that is part of both Mediterranean and Central Europe) have previously written about asthma, rhinitis and eczema in various parts of Croatia (9-16), there was little data about
atopy, environmental exposures and lifestyle that could be associated with asthma in the Croatian population.
The control group consisted of healthy subjects without urticaria to compare the prevalence results of the self-reports, the frequency of IgE sensitization (
atopy), and the challenge test results from the CSU group.
The patient had a history of
atopy with hay fever and AD, which manifested in early childhood.
In veterinary medicine we tend to use the term"
atopy", which is more generalised and relates to an allergy to anything in the dog's environment.
